The most important part of your Venice Carnival break is feeling the part! In many ways it is akin to your wedding day; making sure that you look and feel absolutely amazing is crucial!. When you book a Venice Carnival break with Italian Short Breaks, you get to have a scheduled appointment with one of the best Atelier’s (costume house) in Venice, whose job it is to do just that!

If you are attending either Il Ballo del Doge or Best of…Il Ballo del Doge, then you will be able to choose your costume on the day of the fitting. However, if you choose the Mascheranda or Tiepolo balls, you will be sent a pre-selection of costumes that suit both your sizing and colour preferences.

Once you arrive at the Atelier they help to dress you and look at relevant accessories to match your costume – masks, capes, jewellery to complete your look. However they are very good sales people, and quite expensive,  so if you want to take some accessories with you to save some pennies then please do!

We particularly recommend taking your own shoes and making sure they are comfortable before you leave home. The Atelier can provide buckles for the men; turning the shoes into period attire, and it means everyone is happy to get on the dance floor! Most of the items can be hired from the Atelier, however, please note for hygiene reasons, earrings, wigs and masks must be purchased.

Now is the exhilarating part! All dressed up in your period finery, head out promenading to St Mark’s Square, where the tourists will take your photo, and tell you how fantastic you look. This really is the best ego boost!

Then, for the night of your chosen ball, once again looking fantastic, you get to dance, be entertained, wined and dined heading back into a past age. All the balls have their own special flavour – Both Il Ballo del Doge and Best of…Il Ballo del Doge are top level entertainment focused, Mascheranda is the party ball with the most involvement and Tiepolo is for those who love traditional dancing.

One thing is for sure; your Venice Carnival break will be like no other!

About Hannah Netting

Hannah has had the travel bug from an early age where she was fortunate enough to travel widely, including a four month trip around the world. For her experiencing new cultures, sights and wonders was very important.

Lately her focus has been heavily on Italy enhanced by many wonderful trips including Verona, Venice, Top to Toe, Florence, amongst many others. In Venice she got lost in true Venetian style and got to experience the amazing acoustics of the Verona Arena. Currently Florence is her favourite, but this can always change! With plenty on offer in Italy, it will keep her entertained for many more trips to come!
