The Venice Carnival Experience
Venice Carnival is when this floating city really comes alive. Every year for two weeks around February time, the Venetians dress in period costumes, promenade through St Mark’s Square and many attend at least one of the wonderful Carnival Balls on offer.
Once you have arrived at your hotel, the experience begins. Everything in Venice will be geared up for the events, and streets will be lined with people in fantastic decorative period costumes. The next day you too will be a part of this! Your appointment for your costume fitting will be at one of the best Atelier’s in Venice. They will dress you and make sure you have all the accessories needed to complete your transformation. They are also very good at selling you items!
Now you too can promenade around Venice while tourists photograph you and pay you compliments. This is the time when you can head to Café Laverna for refreshment, or attend a Cotillon dance. The Cotillon dance takes you to 5 star Hotel Danieli, where you learn the main historical dances. Be warned, there is hot chocolate and pastries to keep your energy levels up!
You are now ready for attending the ball, and assuming you have chosen one of the main Venice Carnival balls (Il Ballo del Doge, the Mascheranda Ball, the Tiepolo Ball), then your ball will take place in the beautiful Palazzo Pisani Moretta. This palace has frescoes on some of the walls, and will be decorated in keeping with the theme and age of the ball. The opulent surroundings include candelabras, chandeliers and elaborate set designs and drapes. The entertainment is hard to beat with an ensemble of dancers, singers, acrobats and jesters, to name but a few. Depending on the ball there will be a chance for you to get up and dance in the traditional style, before heading downstairs, to the live music and DJ performing the more up-tempo beats. As with everything related to the Venice Carnival, being in your mask you are free to be whoever you want to be for the evening!
